Arsenal's Manager Concedes Future Tenure Hinges on Securing Major Honors.
Ahead of marking his sixth anniversary at the helm, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his future at Arsenal is directly connected to delivering trophies.
The Journey So Far: The Arteta Era
Arteta was appointed on the 20th of December in 2019 and managed to steer the team to an cup win within months. However, that first major trophy stands as his only major honor since succeeding Unai Emery.
“I can,” he stated upon being asked about his future past 2027. “But it’s about today. And a lot of things must occur in the near future as well to earn the right.”
Saturday night brings the six-year milestone with a fixture against Everton, the identical team Arsenal played immediately following his appointment was announced.
The Current Landscape
With trailing Manchester City taking on West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal could be displaced first place in the Premier League before their own match begins. This potential shift despite Arteta managing a squad that has suffered in excess of one hundred injury setbacks from the beginning of last season.
The manager currently has 18 months to run on the contract he inked in 2024, however, he knows that results must come sooner rather than later.
Survival in the Job
He went on to explain, highlighting the daily requirement to validate his position. “I think a manager has to earn the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you talk here, how you enter the dressing room, the signal you send.”
Arteta continued, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the hierarchy, yet identifying the players' commitment as the key factor. “Ultimately, the most important ones are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, desire to learn and give their all to the team.”
Injury Concerns
The squad faces the weekend fixture dealing with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a strain that is likely to sideline him for a few weeks.
A Different Club
Even with the availability issues and the immense scrutiny, Arteta feels the club's “priorities and messaging” are completely changed from when he began his reign.
The manager referenced the record-breaking achievements as a sign they are nearing their goal. “You look at the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the standard we operate at.”
Arteta concluded, “That is a level that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And our aim is to achieve greater objectives. And if we do that, I think we are on the proper course to winning.”
